At Great Lakes United Football Club, we have a strong interest in the ongoing development of youth and grass-roots football.
Our Winter season runs from April to the end of August and consists of three key development areas for our players and supporters:
- U6s and U7s – playing format is 4v4 on a 30m x 20m field with 2x1m pop-up goals and a size 3 ball. Game duration is 20min halves. Coaches often remain on field with the kids to facilitate the game and encourage teamwork and rules of the game. There are no goalkeepers, offsides, throw-ins or corner kicks. The ball is always brought back into play with a kick from where the ball went out.
- U8s and U9s – playing format is 7v7 (inc. goalkeepers) on a 45m x 35m field with 3x2m goals and a size 4 ball. There is a 12x5m penalty area in which the goalkeepers can use their hands. Goalkeepers are not permitted to kick or drop-kick the ball from their hands after a save. Goal kicks can be from anywhere in the penalty area.
Game duration is 20min halves. Coaches are sometimes on field with the kids but are encouraged to coach from the side of field and allow Game Leaders to facilitate the game. Corner kicks and throw-ins are now included but there are no offsides.
- U10s and U11s – playing format is 9v9 (inc. goalkeepers) on a 65m x 45m field with 5x2m goals and a size 4 ball. There is a 20x10m penalty area in which the goalkeepers can use their hands. Goalkeepers are not permitted to kick or drop-kick the ball from their hands after a save. Goal kicks can be from anywhere in the penalty area.
Game duration is 25min halves. Coaches are not-permitted on field and should be reminded to coach from the side of field and allow Game Leaders to facilitate the game.
There are still no offsides but it is coaching of the offside rule is encouraged and Game Leader instruction of blatant offside positioning is encouraged without breaking the flow of the game.
From Under 12s to U18s, matches are played on a regulation size field following FFA regulation rules.
These matches are competitive and teams should be graded and placed in a results ladder for finals competitions.
U12s teams still use a size 4 ball and retain 25min halves.
U13s teams also use a size 4 ball but have 30min halves.
U14s and above use a size 5 ball and move to 40min halves.
Our seniors football development encourages involvement of both male and female adults in Opens teams (Mens and Womens) as well as Over 35s.
Our standard Winter Football Registration Fees for 2024 are as follows:
- U6’s & U7’s: $100
- U8’s – U11’s: $115
- U12’s & U18’s: $130
- Seniors (Open Mens, Womens and Over 35’s): $250

Collectively, GLUFC usually has between 25-30 teams across all three development areas.
With a growing players cohort (over 300 registered players in the 2023 season), our club hosts home games for multiple teams each weekend. Visiting clubs from the Great Lakes and Manning regions make up the Southern Zone of the Football Mid North Coast parent organisation and Northern NSW Football governing body.
